Unit 1378

Category: skeleton    dug in 1996

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: skeleton

Data Category Information: none

Dimensions: 0.65 x 0.35m

Description: burial

Discussion: The skeleton was found in a pit. It is in a complete, tightly flexed position lying on the left side. The bones are all in articulation. The hyoid and the patellas are in position. Left hand located under the legs at the feet. The right foot is pressed against the limit of the pit, forced into an unnatural position. Scapula is displaced vertically pressed against the side of the pit. Right humerus has fragmented. The hand and arm bones are in correct anatomical position.
The skull and the mandible are broken / smashed.
Inclusions of the immediate grave soil occur as tiny flecks of charcoal but only a few. A white substance perhaps a form of clay occurred quite commonly. Very similar to this was a white fibrous material which was laid down in lines both vertically and horizontally (?) Plant root salts /phytoliths.
No relative movement of the bones since internment.

This skeleton may have been tied as the bones are so tightly flexed.

Condition: many visitors, hot, crowded in tent, filming
