Category: layer dug in 1997 |
| |
Area: North |
| |
Interpretive Categories: grave fill, pit fill |
| |
| Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: heterogeneous |
| |
Dimensions: 0.8m long, 0.6m wide, 0.25m thick |

Discussion: Fill of grave cut 2176. Very mixed material, deriving partially from deposits grave = cut through. A clay ball fragment, animal bone, obsidian flakes, some possible daub and a pot sherd were recovered from the fill, but these may well be residual from earlier deposits. It was identifiably different from 2124 however, and appeared less disturbed by subsequent burial activity. Fill lay above, around and below bones, but for reasons of stratigraphic simplicity it + on matrix as above skeleton 2169
(2nd sheet added around 17.9) This deposit must now be interpreted as the fill of a recutting / burial moving episode, which is why it contains skeletal elements from 3 different individuals |

| Execution: Trowel, Hand Shovel, small tools |
| Condition: dry, warm |
| Consistency: weak to firm |
| Colour: mostyly 5Y 4/2 olive grey when damp, but also darker and lighter grey mottling |
| Texture: variable - most of deposit is a sandy silty loam but there are more clayey lumps within it |
| Bedding: massive - very mixed fill |
| Inclusions: scattered fragments of daub (<30mm<5%), also mud brick frags (<10mm<2%) + plaster/mortar frags (<2mm<5%) but most larger pieces = below skeleton |
| Post-depositional Features: fine root penetration. Also mineral salt accretion around skeleton 2169 and the edge of the cut |
| Basal Boundary: not very clear or distinct (10-20mm). 2175 + very similar to material that grave cuts through |

| Finds Room Information: |
| All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below. |
| X Finds Material: nothing recorded |
