Unit 1359

Category: layer    dug in 1996

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: floor

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)

Dimensions: 2.9 x 1.25 x 18 mm

Discussion: FLOOR SURFACE-appears to be two main phases of layers each ~9cm thick, overlying floor make-up~18cm thick; this in turn overlies another phase of plaster floor at the centre of the space, below the raised slope at the north end of the floor/ adjacent to the platform. It is very probable that the two phases of plaster first mentioned which were noticed at this high point were only separated by make-up down slope.

Consistency: Very firm
Colour: 5 YR 7/2 pinkish grey
Texture: Silty loam
Bedding: Layered
Inclusions: Flecks of plaster, charcoal and burnt mudbricks - all 5% <1mm
Post-depositional Features: Roots

Unit description: Very small unit. A few pieces of sheep-size scrap, a tiny fragment of antler, and a fragment of ?eggshell (not recorded). Almost no burning. Rather weathered. 100% of 4mm flotation processed. 4mm flotation sorted and recorded completely. Sample 1 is small, with small fragments of mostly sheep-size animals. Very little burning. Sample 11 is similar, with a bit more burning. Sample 17 is similar, but slightly larger. Sample 18 is small and similar. Sample 19 is similar but contains 1 sizable piece of long bone shaft fragment. Sample 28 has 4 largish pieces (1-2 cm), which manage to incorporate a whole range of burning, weathering, and digestion; seems very secondary, like sterile fill. Sample 29 has 4 bits of sheep-size scrap; two very fresh, two quite worn. Looks like clean floor with recent droppings. >4mm with no sample number: Mostly sheep-size crumbles under 1 cm, mostly quite fresh. Also several largish fragments of bird bone, and some fish. Looks like sweepings after chicken dinner. Last number = 100
