Discussion: This white marl/plaster layer apppeared originally to cover most of F.279. It is now clear that it does cover the N and "base" surface, but was itself covered on the S face by layers of brown and white deposits (perhaps not covered in many areas but overlain stratigraphically and to a certain extent physically). Upon excavation, which started with the upper surface, it became clear that the S "elevation" was actually a different deposit, numbered (3303), separated from (3300) by a grey/brown deposit (3304), which are stratigraphically later than than (3300).
Unit (3300) ran down the N face of F.279 and along the base (NSH 7/9/98).
This unit was very difficult to separate from adjacent plaster layers and the finished plans are probably not accurate.
Basically this is a basal layer of F.279 but in detail there seem to have been some lower layers of plaster and the "moulded hornshaped thing" under the central area seems not to have been joined on but underlay (3300). However, if F.279 is the roof of a bin, this could explain the occasional additional layers and strengthening of the interior, especially the upper exterior surface was a small work platform.
Profiles of (3300) were taken for the lower layer and profiles of the whole feature will add the upper parts and N face. Whether they can be fitted together accurately I'm not certain.
(3300) ran along the lower horizon of F.279 (give and take a few thin layers) up the N face and over the top of (3394), a moulded hornshaped element. It curled down the S face a little but was overlain by multiple layers of other deposits here (added 10/9/98). |
