LOCAL CRAFT INITIATIVE

Figure 11. Fatima Can and Mavili Ersöz set up their weaving frame in the Visitor Centre and Nurşen Yilmaz used this clay stamp seal found in the 1960s as the basis for the kilim design.

Another new initiative that we hope will flourish is in collaboration with the municipality of our local town of Çumra. Using the skills of a women's weaving school in Çumra we hope to set up a small weaving school at the site where Çatal designs can be used in kilim design and production. We hope to establish funding in order to extend weaving skills to our local village communities.

So, throughout the 2004 season we had 2 weavers set up their looms in the Visitor Centre. Using the design of a clay stamp seal (Fig 11) Nurşen Yilmaz (Çumra Belediyesi), drew up a pattern which Fatima Can and Mavili Ersöz translated into a kilim. Interestingly, Nurşen noted that reproducing what look like simple geometric designs from the stamp seals is not in fact that simple, in some cases the starting and end point of a continuous pattern is difficult to fathom. This problem is supported by Ali Türkcan, our stamp seal analyst, so already, this local collaborative exercise has direct input in the analysis of the archaeological data.
